Why Silk Sarees Lose Lustre in Bangalore (And How to Restore It)

Three years into owning a beautiful Mysore silk and the lustre is gone. The saree feels flat, the colour looks tired, and no amount of careful folding seems to fix it. It's not the silk — it's how Bangalore is treating it.

Hard water is the silent killer

Bangalore municipal water averages 280–400 ppm hardness — well above the 80–120 ppm that silk needs to retain natural sericin. Every wash (even at a local dry cleaner using tap water) deposits a thin calcium-magnesium film on the fibre. Over 4–5 cycles this film is what dulls the shine. A studio using softened, pH-balanced water doesn't have this problem.

Monsoon humidity oxidises silk

June through September, indoor humidity sits at 75–85%. Silk stored in closed almirahs absorbs moisture, sericin oxidises, and you get the characteristic yellowing on cream and ivory sarees. By the time you notice, fibre damage is already done.

Plastic covers are not 'safe'

The transparent plastic covers most stores deliver sarees in are a major lustre killer. Plastic traps the saree's own moisture, accelerates yellowing, and causes mildew spots on the zari. Switch to cotton bags within a week of bringing a saree home.

How professional restoration works

A lustre-restoration clean uses three steps the regular dry cleaner skips. One — a silk-safe enzyme pre-treat to lift hard-water deposits. Two — a hydrocarbon solvent cycle (not perchloroethylene, which strips natural oils). Three — a sericin-balanced re-finish that restores the natural sheen. Results visible in one cycle on most everyday silks.

When restoration won't work

Permanent dye fade from sunlight, structural fibre damage from prolonged plastic storage, or zari that's already corroded — these are not reversible. But the most common Bangalore problem (dulling from hard water and humidity) almost always is.
