Dry Cleaning vs Laundry: When to Use Which (And Why It Matters)

Most people use 'dry cleaning' and 'laundry' interchangeably. They're completely different processes — and using the wrong one shrinks, bleeds, or destroys fabric permanently.

What dry cleaning actually is

Dry cleaning uses a liquid solvent (perchloroethylene or hydrocarbon) instead of water. The solvent dissolves oil-based stains without saturating the fabric fibres. No water means no shrinkage, no colour bleed, no fabric distortion — which is why silk, wool, leather, suede, and structured garments (suits, blazers) must be dry-cleaned.

What laundry (wash & fold) is

Water-based washing with detergent. Great for cotton, linen, denim, polyester, and any everyday wear that can handle agitation. Cheaper, faster, and more eco-friendly for the right fabrics.

Reading the care label

A circle means dry-clean only. A washtub means machine wash. A crossed-out symbol means do not. When in doubt, dry-clean — water damage is irreversible, solvent damage is rare.

When laundry is enough

Office shirts, daily kurtas, jeans, bedsheets, towels, kids clothes. Wash & fold is the right call for everyday wear. Booking dry cleaning for these is just throwing money away.
